COVID-19 and the Critically Ill Patient
- COVID-19 manifests primarily as an acute respiratory illness with interstitial and alveolar pneumonia, but it can affect multiple organs such as the kidney.1
- Early reports suggested a lower incidence (3%–9%) of AKI in those with COVID-19 infection compared to SARS and MERS-CoV infections. However, more recent information shows a higher frequency of renal dysfunction in hospitalized patients, with 15% having elevations in serum creatinine, an indicator of abnormal kidney function.2
- Critically ill patients with COVID-19 infection may present a higher incidence of AKI compared with less sick patients.3
- Whether AKI associated with COVID-19 infection is caused by a coronavirus-induced cytopathic effect or cytokine storm-induced systemic inflammatory response remains unclear.4
- The development of AKI in patients with COVID-19 infection has been associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality.5
